Youth Clinical Therapist
- MORE ABOUT BECKY -
What are your areas of experience?
I’m Becky Potenberg, LPC, NCC, a youth clinical therapist with over a decade of experience working with adolescents—as both a teacher and a therapist. I work with kids and teens ages 5–18, using a client-centered, trauma-informed approach to help them navigate life’s challenges, build resilience, and grow into confident, empowered individuals.
I offer school-based therapy services and often work directly within school environments to provide accessible, consistent support. I believe that collaborating with teachers, staff, and families is essential in helping youth thrive both emotionally and academically.
As a proud member of the LGBTQIA+ community, I’m especially passionate about gender affirming therapy, creating a safe and affirming space for young people exploring their identity, managing difficult emotions, or seeking support in a world that can often feel overwhelming or isolating.
What are your clinical interests?
One of the most unique aspects of my practice is my use of Animal Assisted Therapy and Animal Assisted Play Therapy. My therapy dog, Katie, is a gentle and intuitive partner who helps kids feel safe, connected, and open to healing. I also bring a deep love and understanding of animals into my work, thanks to years of experience caring for a wide range of species.
How would you describe your therapeutic approach?
My therapeutic style is rooted in empathy, playfulness, and evidence-based practices. I often incorporate motivational interviewing, along with client-centered and trauma-informed techniques, to meet young people where they are and support meaningful, lasting change.
Are there any specialized trainings or treatment models that you frequently incorporate?
I frequently incorporate several specialized approaches into my work, particularly Animal Assisted Therapy and Animal Assisted Play Therapy, which have been incredibly effective in helping young clients feel safe, engaged, and emotionally connected during sessions. I also use Motivational Interviewing to support behavior change and help clients explore their own values and goals in a non-judgmental way.
My work is grounded in trauma-informed and client-centered practices, and I continue to pursue ongoing training to ensure I’m using the most effective, compassionate, and developmentally appropriate tools available. I strive to adapt my approach to meet each child or teen’s unique needs while maintaining a strong therapeutic relationship built on trust and respect. Certified in Theraplay Model.
What are your hobbies?
Outside of the therapy room, I enjoy staying active through pickleball and kayaking—activities that help me recharge, stay grounded, and connect with nature.
